Up and running in 3 minutes

Download & install

Download the DMG, open it, and drag Whisper Anywhere into your Applications folder.

  • Open the downloaded .dmg file
  • Drag the app icon into Applications
  • Launch Whisper Anywhere from Applications

Sign in with Google

  • The configuration window appears on first launch
  • Click "Sign in with Google"
  • Complete sign-in in your browser
  • You will see a green checkmark with your email when done

Grant macOS permissions

Whisper Anywhere needs three permissions to work. The app walks you through each one:

  • Microphone — System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Click "Allow" when macOS prompts you, or enable Whisper Anywhere there if permission was previously denied. This lets the app record your voice.
  • Accessibility — System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility. Toggle Whisper Anywhere ON. This lets the app type text into your active app.
  • Input Monitoring — System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring. Toggle Whisper Anywhere ON. This lets the app detect when you hold the Fn key.

Start dictating

You're all set. Whisper Anywhere lives in your menu bar. To dictate anywhere:

  • Click into any text field in any app
  • Hold Fn and speak
  • Release Fn — your words appear at the cursor
  • If no text field is focused, the transcript is copied to your clipboard so you can paste it anywhere.

What Mac do I need?

Any Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.

Do I need an API key?

No. Whisper Anywhere handles transcription for you — just sign in with Google and you're ready to go.

Is it free?

Yes, Whisper Anywhere is free to use.

What if there's no active text cursor?

Your transcript is automatically copied to the clipboard so you can paste it wherever you need.

Is my audio stored anywhere?

No. Whisper Anywhere does not persist audio recordings or transcripts in app storage or on any server.

Why does it need Accessibility and Input Monitoring?

Accessibility permission lets the app type text into your active app. Input Monitoring lets it detect when you hold the Fn key. Both are standard macOS requirements.
